Categories TPI measure abstract reasoning. It uses visual information with which the candidate draws abstract inductive conclusions. Each exercise consists of three images that constitute one category. From the five response options two images need to be chosen which complement the category.

This test has been developed by Peter Tellegen (RuG) and is an adaptation of a test for the deaf and hearing impaired which is deployed worldwide. The test is Reduced Culture Sensitive (RCS). This means that the socio-cultural backgrounds of candidates have a weaker effect.

The test can be used in selection procedures, especially for positions requiring analytical skills and insight.

Example Question

The task is to select two matching pictures in the upper row of images. This requires an abstract process to find a category to where the two pictures belong. The example question is quite simple, the questions increase in difficulty.
